Root Canals

Root Canal Treatment

If a cavity is left untreated, the decay will reach the pulp nerve of the tooth. When there’s trauma to a tooth, with or without visible crack, the nerve may also be involved. You may or may not experience pain and swelling, but your dentist will recommend root canal treatment in order to save the tooth. If untreated, the tissue around the root can be infected. Infection can put you at risk of losing the tooth, or even more teeth around it. We will numb the tooth during the repair, just like what we do for a filling.

FAQ

Why do root canal treatments take 2 or more visits?

Most root canals can be done in one to two appointments. The first appointment is to remove the infected pulp and relieve pain. If there is still infection in the bone, you will need to wait for a few days and come back for the second (and maybe third) appointment to get the canals filled.

Is it better to pull a tooth or get a root canal?

While pulling the tooth might be the only option for some situation, we always recommend to save the tooth if possible. The goal of a root canal treatment is to make the tooth function as it normally does.

Do you need a crown after root canal treatment?

It highly depends on the location of the tooth. Back teeth like molars and premolars are needed more for chewing, thus require crowns. On the other hand, front teeth don’t always need crowns.
